Also called oonseentia (Miami-Illinois language), tuliptree Magnolia (it is in the same family as Magnolias), American tulip tree and tulip poplar (its flower looks like a tulip flower), whitewood (from its wood), fiddle-tree (from the shape of the leaf), and yellow poplar (although not part of the "poplar" genus Populus).

Native to eastern North America, where the flowers are a major source of honey.  Wood is used to make furniture and musical instruments.
