In the southern 🇺🇸 USA, also called ◼︎ yellow pine.  Although do not confuse with sister-species also sometimes called that:

• shortleaf pine  Pinus echinata (this plant!) (in southern 🇺🇸 USA) (where wood marketed as ◼︎ southern yellow pine SYP),
• slash pine  Pinus elliottii          (in southern 🇺🇸 USA) (where wood marketed as ◼︎ southern yellow pine SYP),
• longleaf pine  Pinus palustris  (in southern 🇺🇸 USA) (where wood marketed as ◼︎ southern yellow pine SYP),
• loblolly pine  Pinus taeda        (in southern 🇺🇸 USA) (where wood marketed as ◼︎ southern yellow pine SYP),
• Jeffrey pine  Pinus jeffreyi             (in western 🇺🇸 USA) (where also called ◼︎ western yellow pine),
• ponderosa pine  Pinus ponderosa (in western 🇺🇸 USA) (where also called ◼︎ western yellow pine),
• ◼︎ eastern white pine  Pinus strobus (in 🇬🇧 UK), and
• Scots pine  Pinus sylvestris              (in 🇬🇧 UK).

Part of 🌲︎ pine  genus Pinus in 🌲︎ cedar / fir / hemlock / larch / pine / spruce  family Pinaceae in 🌲︎ conifer  order Pinales.

Native to 🇺🇸 USA mid-Atlantic and South.

due to possible infestation by the insect mountain pine beetle (MPB)  Dendroctonus ponderosae, which carries various species of 🍄︎ fungus / mushroom  kingdom Fungi.

Pinus hosts caterpillars of 247 species
of butterflies and moths, in some areas.   This plant is also known to be a host for (in areas where invasive) 🐝︎ spotted lanternfly (SLF)  Lycorma delicatula.
