Genus host to caterpillars of 187 species
of butterflies and moths, in some areas.

Formerly abundant, in most places only very-young trees can be found, due to infestation by Dutch elm disease (DED).   This author has seen two beautiful majestic mature elms, apparently spared from DED by geographic isolation.  And I have read about a blight-resistant variety.
